Mathematics Assignments

AZ Academy’s students will complete web-based mathematics practice this summer to brush up on skills that will help them be successful in the upcoming school year!

Students entering 1st – 9th grade will work at Sumdog’s website – directions for accessing the site and completing work are below.

Students entering 10th – 12th grade will work at Khan Academy’s website – directions for accessing the site and completing work are below.

SumDog Directions for Students Entering 1st – 9th Grade:

Your student’s account has been created for you.  The username and password will be emailed to you.  This is a highly engaging website, and we are sure your student will enjoy learning through this format!  Note that it requires Flash Player, which does not work on iPads or iPhones!

Here are the directions for accessing and using this website:

1)      Click on the link: http://www.sumdog.com/user/sign_in

2)      Enter username, password, and school code (azacademy), and then click login in the bottom right corner.

3)      On the left side is a panel of colored options…

  • Log out – for when you are done
  • Choose subject – select math
  • Choose activity – you can select training or tables
  • Choose skills – first it will have you play some games so that the program can determine where you are and then after that you will be able top pick specific skills to work on
  • Games – here is where you can choose which game you want to play
  • Play – this option allows you to play against the world, your classmates, or a robots
  • House – this is where you can customize your avatar and buy things with your coins

5)      Playing games is easy…

  • When you click on the games tile, a page opens with lots of game choices
  • Click on a game, and play it to earn points which earn you coins
  • The home page shows you how many training points you have earned
  • Once the game is done, click next and it will show you which questions you missed

6) Your coins earned are posted in your House (bottom left), and by clicking on it, you can go inside to shop!

Students should earn 200 coins over the course of the summer!

Once your student begins playing these games, you will see it is easy to earn these coins, but please do not hesitate to call if your student is struggling.  Math summer work is due on the first Friday of the school year, which is September 2nd this year!

Khan Academy Directions for Students Entering 10th – 12th Grade:

Follow the directions for setting up your account below.  Note that there is a Khan Academy mobile app that will allow students to use tablets as well as PC.

Once the student account is created, search for the level that you child has been assigned (see below).

Click on a practice to begin.  As an overview, these are the resources and details about each practice:

  • On the top right of the practice, it shows how many questions will need to be completed in a row to successfully pass the practice.  This number varies based on what practice is selected.
  • On the bottom right is a video resource that teaches the lesson in case the student needs a review before beginning.
  • If more help is needed, in the middle on the right hand side is a hint button.  Note that clicking on this button automatically makes the answer incorrect.

Students are expected to complete 15 practices over the course of the summer!

Math summer work is due on the first Friday of the school year, which is September 2nd this year! Please call Mr. Mauree at 626-0577 for assistance!

If your student does not already have a Khan Academy account:

1)  Go to www.khanacademy.org
2)  On the bottom right side, click on parent sign up tab
3)  Enter first name, last name, and email address and click on sign up
4)  You will receive an email with a link – click on finish signing up
5)  Create a user name and password
6)  Then answer the questions to create your child’s account (add another child if needed)
7)  Log out and let your child log in
8)  Agree to terms of service
9)  Click on the math grade or course level for the class you just completed and take the pre-test.  If you are a new enrollee, Mr. Mauree will guide you in which choice below is best for you.  You will receive an email that specifies which grade or course level the student should register with to receive appropriate practice.  Otherwise, use these details below as a guide
10) Once completed, click on “close task summary” at the bottom of the page
11) On the left side, click on coach – add mheller@azvi.org as your coach; the parent should show up on the right side already as a coach as well.

  • Integrated Mathematics I completed – choose Algebra I
  • Integrated Mathematics II completed – choose Geometry or Algebra II

If your student already has a Khan Academy account:

1) Have your student log in
2) On the dashboard on the left side, click on coach – add mheller@azvi.org as your coach; the parent should show up on the right side already as a coach as well if you set up your child’s account
3) Click on the math grade or course level for the class you just completed and take the pre-test (if prompted)

  • Integrated Mathematics I completed – choose Algebra I
  • Integrated Mathematics II completed – choose Geometry or Algebra II
